Whatever the reason, when fall rolls around, I inevitably find myself craving vampires.

And not the cute, quirky kind.

Give me ancient secrets. Dangerous attraction. Morally gray immortals. Forbidden love. Blood. Betrayal. And romances where falling for the wrong person might actually get someone killed.

So, whether you grew up devouring Twilight and The Vampire Diaries or you’re just discovering how deliciously addictive vampire romance can be, here are six books worth sinking your teeth into this fall.

1. Bride by Ali Hazelwood

Indie readers, this one's for you.

Shadow Touched brings us back into that addictive style of paranormal romance where an ordinary life collides with a supernatural world full of secrets, danger, and vampires.

And that's one reason I wanted it on this list.

One of my favorite things about indie publishing is discovering stories that scratch a very specific reading itch—and if what you miss is the dark, romantic, supernatural tension of classic vampire romance, Becky Moynihan is worth checking out.

5. Crave by Tracy Wolff

If you somehow missed the Crave phenomenon, consider this your invitation.

After tragedy uproots Grace's life, she arrives at Katmere Academy only to discover that this is very much not an ordinary boarding school.

She's surrounded by supernatural factions that don't particularly want her there.

And then there's Jaxon Vega.

He's a vampire with deadly secrets, emotional walls a mile high, and every reason to stay away from Grace.

Naturally, that goes well.

The series eventually expands far beyond the initial vampire romance into supernatural politics, warring factions, dangerous enemies, sacrifice, and increasingly high-stakes relationships. The complete main series now runs through six books: Crave, Crush, Covet, Court, Charm, and Cherish.

Vampires are still hunting her.

And somehow, Jemma's own blood may be the reason.

A Note About the Heat Level

This is also a great example of why labeling an entire series as either "clean" or "spicy" can be misleading.

The Marked Saga begins with little to no spice, but the level of on-page sexual intimacy increases considerably as the series progresses. The author's site describes later installments as increasingly steamy paranormal romance (for example, Book 6 carries a 17+ reader-discretion notice for graphic language and sexual content).

Still thirsty?

Not every vampire book fits neatly into the urban-paranormal-romance box. Some wander a little farther into gothic romance, dark academia, witchy fantasy, or full-blown romantasy.

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

A witch. A vampire. A mysterious enchanted manuscript. And a relationship that violates the rules of their supernatural world.

If you want something more atmospheric, intellectual, and sprawling, Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont's story is an excellent rabbit hole to fall down. The series has continued beyond the original trilogy, including 2024's The Black Bird Oracle.

Blood Orange by Karina Halle

Want your vampires darker, sexier, and more gothic?

Blood Orange brings Dracula into a contemporary dark-romance setting and leans heavily into reincarnated love, obsession, danger, and forbidden attraction. Definitely one for adult readers who like their vampire romances very spicy.

The Coven by Harper L. Woods

This one sits closer to the romantasy/dark-academia end of our spectrum, combining witches, vampires, forbidden attraction, secrets, and a dangerous supernatural institution.

If the words villain romance + dark academia + witches + vampires immediately made you sit up straighter, you know what to do.

The Revenant Games by Margie Fuston

This YA pick moves farther into fantasy territory, with humans caught between witches and vampires and a deadly competition at the center of the story.

Think less "vampire hiding in your hometown" and more high-stakes supernatural fantasy with romance.

Oldies but Goodies: Vampire Books That Still Have Bite

Okay.

We can't talk about vampire books without paying respect to the immortals who came before.

Some of these books are decades old now. Some helped define entire generations of paranormal fiction. And some may already be sitting on your bookshelf.

But if you've never actually read them?

It's never too late to get bitten.

The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice

Before Edward Cullen, Damon Salvatore, or most of today's tortured vampire heroes, there was Lestat.

Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles began with Interview with the Vampire in 1976 and eventually grew into a 13-book saga exploring immortality, loneliness, desire, morality, identity, and what it actually means to exist forever.

These aren't conventional genre romances in the way Bride is, so go in expecting gothic vampire fiction rather than an HEA-driven romance series.

But if you love seductive, morally complicated immortals?

Know your history.

The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith

Before the television show gave us years of Damon-versus-Stefan arguments, there were the books.

Elena. Stefan. Damon.

One girl caught between two vampire brothers—and enough supernatural drama to fuel an entire franchise.

If you only know the television adaptation, it can be a lot of fun to go back and see where everything began.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Yes, Twilight.

We aren't going to pretend it didn't happen.

Bella moves to rainy Forks, Washington, meets the mysterious Edward Cullen, discovers he's a vampire, and an entire generation of readers suddenly had very strong opinions about immortal teenage boys.

Whatever your feelings about the series today, its influence on modern YA paranormal romance is enormous.

And sometimes?

You just want to go back to Forks.

Temptation by R.L. Stine

Here's the deep cut.

Yes, that R.L. Stine.

Before you knew him only as the Goosebumps guy, Stine was also writing darker stories for older readers—including vampires.

Temptation collects his vampire stories Goodnight Kiss, Goodnight Kiss 2, and Vampire Club. It's darker and more horror-forward than the modern paranormal romances elsewhere on this list, but for readers who grew up on '90s supernatural YA, this one is pure nostalgia.

Why Are We Still Obsessed With Vampire Romance?

Vampire romance keeps reinventing itself.

The vampires change.

The worlds change.

The heat levels definitely change.

But the fantasy underneath it remains remarkably similar.

Someone dangerous chooses you.

Someone who could live forever decides eternity wouldn't mean much without you in it.

And suddenly love isn't just romantic.

It's forbidden.

Dangerous.

Possibly deadly.

Maybe that's why, decades after Lestat, Stefan, Damon, Edward, and countless other immortals first sank their teeth into pop culture, we're still coming back for more.
