Adventures in Editing: Update 21

My weekly, Friday update....

This is it! It's the end of another week and the end of Q3. That means that next week, we shift into the 4th quarter AND a new month!

I've been trying to get organized, using Sarra Cannon's HB90 Method to help me set writing goals and develop productive writing habits. So far, her method has been useful. But I'm not using all the components yet, and I'm still trying to mentally grasp the whole process.

Regardless of all that, the end of the quarter (or the end of the month for that matter) is still a good time to review how everything went, what goals were or weren't met, and reset for the next month/quarter.

And, as you might have guessed, that's where I am coming into Q4.

With that said, I only met with 1 of my Betas this past week (the 2nd one had to cancel). Feedback was good, and I was excited to hear everything she had to tell me. Unfortunately, she was only done with half of the book, so we'll need to meet again to discuss the second half in a few weeks.

In other news, I've been working steadily on Book 2, and have been making some great progress! After my feedback session, however, there were some recommendations of adding 1 or 2 extra scenes to assist in relational development between my MC and the potential love interest. I thought the recommendation was solid, so I shifted gears and started working on those additional scenes.

So, as you can see, I've been busy and making steady progress. As such, I'm coming into Q4 feeling really proud of what I've accomplished and where I'm going.

With that, let's look at how I did this past week:

Goal: Feedback Session

Result: I had 1 of 2 feedback sessions. Unfortunately the 2nd one has been postponed to next week. Despite that, I did begin applying the feedback that I received so far, and am happy with the progress I've made.

Bonus Goal: Write!

Result: Before I had my feedback session, I wanted to stay productive. So, I've been busily typing away on book 2. I'm really proud of myself because, so far, I've written approximately 7k words!

The Plan: It's time to get ready for Q4, and part of that is going to be getting ready for NaNoWriMo. This weekend I'll be going away for a one night trip to Sea World, San Diego to celebrate my son's 6th birthday. He's never been, and I haven't been in over a decade. So this weekend is toast since I'll be focusing on celebrating my Little Man.

Next week, overall, doesn't look too bad. It's still busy, and I have massive amounts of papers to grade for my students. So, unfortunately, despite having some time to work on my writing goals, I might need to redirect that time toward grading instead.

So, I want to keep things simple for myself and make my goals super achievable.

Goal 1: I want to finish writing the additional scene recommended from Beta 2.

Goal 2: I want to have my final feedback session with with Beta 1.

Goal 3: I want to develop my writing goals and decide on my projects for Q4.

Of course, if I nail that, I'll probably keep plucking away at book 2, but my focus is going to be on finishing book 1 and getting organized.

That's all for today! Have a great week and don't forget to keep turning the page!
