Fearless by Lauren Roberts: A Satisfying Finale That Saves the Series

If you love a good forbidden romance, fierce heroines, and a story that finds redemption in the end—Fearless might be the fantasy finale you didn’t know you needed.
Lauren Roberts returns with the third and final book in her Powerless trilogy, and while Fearless isn’t without its flaws, it undeniably does what sequels should do: raise the stakes, deepen the characters, and wrap the story with enough payoff to make the journey worth it.
Let’s break down what makes Fearless stand out—and how it helped save the trilogy from the slower pacing of book two, Reckless.

Quick Recap: What Is Fearless About?
Fearless picks up where Reckless left off—with the world turned upside down and our heroine Payden caught in a whirlwind of heartbreak, power plays, and personal betrayal.
She’s no longer the outsider she once was. Now, Payden is engaged—to a prince. The problem? She’s very much still in love with his brother, Kai.
Yeah, it’s complicated.
But while the romance is tangled and tense, Fearless also zooms out to address the bigger picture: rebellion, power, and what it means to fight for a kingdom when you're not sure who the real enemy is.
We also get a closer look at the mysterious kingdom across the sea—a delicious tease of what could be an entirely new series (Lauren, if you’re reading this, please and thank you 🙏).
The Romance: Forbidden, Angsty, and Worth the Wait
At the heart of this finale is the emotional storm between Payden and Kai. Their relationship has always walked the line between loyalty and longing—but now that Payden is engaged to his brother, things are even messier.
This is forbidden romance at its finest. There’s tension, there’s guilt, and there’s a slow-burning ache that makes every stolen glance feel like a spark in the dark.
Roberts leans into the love triangle trope here, but it never feels overdone. The chemistry between Payden and Kai has been simmering for two books (with Reckless finally popping that bubble at the very end)—and Fearless finally lets it boil over in all the best ways.

What Fearless Gets Right
Payoff. After the meandering plot of Reckless, Fearless delivers on action, emotion, and the long-awaited momentum the trilogy needed.
Character Growth. Payden shines as a heroine who’s no longer surviving—she’s leading, even if she’s not always sure how.
Forbidden Romance. The tension is real, and the stakes are higher than ever.
Series Closure. Loose ends are tied up, relationships come full circle, and readers are left with an ending that feels earned.
What We Wish We Got More Of…
While we got a glimpse of the broader world, Fearless left us wanting more exploration of the distant kingdom across the sea. There’s a whole new culture, political dynamic, and world that’s hinted at—but never fully developed. Here’s hoping this was intentional foreshadowing for a future spinoff series (seriously, we need it).
Also worth noting: some plot beats in Fearless felt a bit redundant—but considering how much needed to be redeemed after Reckless, it’s forgivable. The trilogy needed a push, and Fearless delivered it—even if it stumbled a little along the way.
Series Summary: Powerless, Reckless, and Fearless
Book 1 (Powerless): Introduced us to Payden’s world, her enemies-to-lovers tension with Kai, and the brutal hierarchy of power.
Book 2 (Reckless): Finally gave us the romance—but stalled on the plot, until that jaw-dropping ending.
Book 3 (Fearless): Brings it all together, injects energy back into the series, and gives us the emotional closure we craved.
If you’ve been on the fence after book two, trust us—Fearless is worth pushing through for.

Who Should Read This Series?
This series is for you if you love:
Young adult romance with grit and high stakes
Romantasy that leans into character dynamics and emotional tension
Fantasy romance where love is just as important as rebellion
Love triangles that are actually satisfying
Forbidden love, angst, and a protagonist who refuses to break
It’s perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, These Hollow Vows, and The Prison Healer.
🚫 Who Might Not Enjoy It?
If you’re looking for a fast-paced political fantasy with heavy worldbuilding from start to finish, this may feel a bit light. The first two books lean heavily on the romance (especially Reckless), and Fearless only starts to expand the world more broadly.
Also, if you’re not into love triangles or slow burn relationships—this trilogy might test your patience.
Final Thoughts
Lauren Roberts' Fearless is a finale that manages to recapture the magic of Powerless, mend what Reckless lacked, and close out the trilogy with emotional payoff. Her writing is smooth, addictive, and effortlessly engaging. While not perfect, Fearless proves that Roberts knows how to deliver a satisfying end.
And if this new kingdom across the sea does get its own series… consider us already pre-ordering. 👀
