Adventures in Editing: Update 9

Updated: Jun 27, 2022

My weekly, Friday update....

Ok, if I could insert a crying emoji here, I totally would. Time to complete my walk of shame.

So, I know today isn't Friday. Yesterday was Friday, and I just couldn't bring myself to write the update because I failed to meet my goals... AGAIN. This is the 2nd week in a row where I flopped, and I totally feel the egg dripping on my face.

I know part of the problem was a busy Father's Day weekend, and then my husband traveled for work all week leaving me to function as a single mom for the whole week. As such, time was short and precious, and I had a laundry list of chores, summer activities, and (of course) my real day job to worry about. That left me with another failed attempt at meeting my goals. *sigh* Oh well... let's get on with this and finish this walk of shame.

1. Goal: Complete Draft 2 Read Through

Result: You already know the answer to this one: No. I could cry right now... seriously! I'm literally 44 pages away from finishing the read through of draft 2. I got so close, but not close enough. Errg!

On the plus side, being only 44 pages away from the end means that I have a pretty good idea of how the overall story is looking. And, I've got to say, I'm really pleased. The added scenes, new beginning, and adjusted story structure seems to have crafted a much better story overall.

In a previous update, I shared that I actually already started writing Draft 3 before this current read through was completed because I saw some adjustments that were needed in Act 1. I can't really speak to how those adjustments are playing into my current opinions of Draft 2, BUT I think that, as far as the editing of major story elements goes, I'm done! I think there's going to be very little major overhauls in my editing notes for this draft, which is super exciting!

2. Goal: Generate Draft 2 Editing Notes

Result: Obviously, I didn't get this done either. Total bummer....

So, here we are at the end of another week with Draft 2 still needing to be read. So, let's take a look at my goals:

The Plan: I want to get the read through for draft 2 FINISHED! Ideally, I'd like to finish reading that sucker TODAY! It's 44 pages... there's no reason I can't finish that read through by the end of today. So, that's Goal 1.

Goal 2 is to create my list of edits for Draft 2. Once again, easy peasy goal, and no reason why I couldn't have this done by the end of the weekend.

As such, I'm going to stretch and go ahead with a 3rd goal for this week. I want to complete the edits for Draft 3. YIKES!

I know, that's a lofty stretch, but I leave for Texas next weekend and will be gone for about a week. I know I'll get absolutely nothing done while I'm out there. So, if I can complete Draft 3 before I go, that means my time away in Texas will not be wasted. Why? Because I'll need to let Draft 3 rest anyways before its read through it. So, using the time in Texas as my "resting" period works incredibly well. So that's the goal!

That's it! Here's to renewed determination to get it done! I'm off to work, but I hope you have an amazing weekend. And don't forget to keep turning the page!
